How to back comb hair neatly?

I know my question doesn't really make sense because back combing is not really neat but i've seen pictures of emo girls who have managed to backcomb their hair and it looks neat-ish so i was wondering if anyone could help me get big emo hair without looking like i've been dragged through a bush... :L Thanks :D xx
